A Christmas Carol

DDDDD, The Hague

From Wednesday 25th December 2019 to Sunday 29th December 2019

In 1992, the world’s most famous Christmas story, ‘A Christmas Carol’ of Charles Dickens’, was turned into a ballet by composer Carl Davis. This story in which the old grumpy and selfish man Scrooge, changes in one night into a loving benefactor, is timeless. As was the case with the top hit "Alice in Winter Wonderland", De Dutch Don’t Dance Division knows better than any other company in the world how to give this ballet its own character. You won’t get a traditional British interpretation. This version is set against the backdrop of The Hague and Scheveningen at the start of the last century.

Eighty years to the day since the last Kindertransport left Prague, this poignant piece reimagines the thoughts and feelings of the Jewish children fleeing persecution, the families they left behind, and the open-hearted British people who took them in. This semi-staged performance is the culmination of a term working with children from across Gloucestershire, and welcomes back some of our young performers from Hereford in 2018, plus features music from ‘The Big String’ project which takes place in Gloucester each February.
